The NFP is a KwaZulu-Natal-rooted party launched on 25 January 2011 by former IFP national chairperson Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi after a split with the IFP, and is generally described as centre-left and social-democratic with an emphasis on traditional leadership, rural development and women's empowerment. Under president Ivan Barnes its public messaging since 2025 has centred on anti-corruption, service delivery and 'economic justice' for the historically dispossessed, alongside a bitter internal dispute over its role in the KZN provincial coalition.
Where the party stands today
In the 2021 local elections the NFP won 51 council seats across 21 municipalities, mostly in KwaZulu-Natal (49), Mpumalanga (1) and the North West (1). It holds the mayor's office in eDumbe today.

Note: SABC on 29 August confirms submitted candidates in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State and Western Cape. No 2026 manifesto text or launch date was verified, including searches around the September leadership court proceedings. The opened 2021 LGE summary and 2024 manifesto-launch coverage remain the newest identifiable programmes. Ivan Barnes is retained from the stored record; the internal leadership dispute prevents treating that as uncontested. The Mercury's 16 September report confirms Shinga's legislature seat was declared vacant after a court ruling and that she was considering appeal. Q3 and Q18 are cleared because the opened eThekwini budget and debt-relief reports do not identify an NFP vote or endorsement. Q19 is cleared because Barnes's general African-unity statement does not establish a spaza-ownership policy. Q11 remains a directly attributable action by then-NFP deputy mayor Zandile Myeni in March 2025, not evidence of her later party's policy.
