The uMkhonto weSizwe Party is a left-wing African-nationalist party founded in 2023 and led by former president Jacob Zuma, advocating radical economic transformation, nationalisation of mines and banks, land expropriation without compensation and constitutional change toward parliamentary and traditional sovereignty. It became South Africa's third-largest party at the 2024 general election, with its support base concentrated in KwaZulu-Natal.
MK contested its first elections in 2024 (it did not exist for the 2021 LGE) and won seats in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, emerging as a significant opposition party. For the 2026 LGE it says it will contest every ward and has unveiled Gauteng metro mayoral candidates - Bongani Baloyi (Johannesburg) and Thulani Shongwe (Ekurhuleni); Baloyi has ruled out a coalition with the DA. MK holds no metro governing or coalition role in Gauteng yet.
